Flower Power
The green canopy of May has descended on Siberia with its freshest greens and scents of lilac and apple blossoms. The harsh box-like architecture of the city is softened into green areas around each flat, and a morning walk to the Rinok is a pleasure as the day is warming up quickly and promises to be 24 degrees. The Rinok in Omsk consists of the bus terminal, the Soviet-era building in mirrored architecture, and a few large shopping centers that actually create a huge shopping complex, movie theater, and sports center. And farther down, just across the street, is the Christmas Cathedral with its red brick, green roof, and white trim. My first trip to Omsk in 2000 showed the bell tower had not quite been completed. The shopping is in full gear on a Saturday morning and the parking lot is full. I must wait 15 minutes at least to get one of the ladies to fill out my order for flowers in the colors of the Russian flag.
