Girl from Miao Tribe / Mädchen von Miao-Stamm / Девочка из племени Мяо
80x80 cm, acrylic, oil on canvas / Acryl, Öl, Leinwand / холст, масло, акрил This picture continues the series of works “Children of the World”, for which I select children, representatives of the most interesting nationalities who, in our age of globalization, have managed to preserve their own culture and traditions, their unique costumes, headdresses, hairstyles, etc. The “Longhorn Miao” are a small tribe, there are only about 5,000 of them. They managed not to dissolve in the crowd and preserve their unique tradition, leaving the accumulated wealth of hair to their daughters and granddaughters. In front of us sits a girl from a remote village in China, a smart representative of the Miao tribe. On the girl's head is Chang Jiao - something between a wig and a huge headdress, consisting of a wooden comb in the shape of a crescent (or horn), which is attached to the neck and around which the hair is wrapped. But it is not their own hair, but the property of their maternal ancestors. According to their beliefs, hair cannot be thrown away. It is like throwing away the experience and strength of your family with your own hands. It is much better to pass this power on to your ancestor. After each combing, the girls remove the fallen hair from the comb and put it in their "hair bank". This will be their legacy for posterity. Miao women collect and store this hair with amazing care for almost their entire lives, hoping to make one day a fancy headdress out of it. The finished product is passed down from mother to daughter, so many Miao women wear Chang Jiao that originally belonged to their great-grandmothers. The wooden comb around which the wig is braided closely resembles a horn in its appearance, which is why people are often called "Long-horned Miao". "Horns" are considered the richer the more hair has accumulated for this headdress. It is said, "this is how my ancestors took care of me. I have such a glorious family!" The painting is made in the style of modern impressionism in acrylic and oil on canvas using the highest quality materials. It is ready to hang on the wall and comes with hooks.
